Often confused with Ruby, Red Spinel is
but one variety of this family of gemstones that is available in most of the
colours of the rainbow. The "Black Princes Ruby", a 170 carat stone
in the Imperial Crown is in fact a Red Spinel. Available today in a host
of colours the principal sources of Spinel are The Union of Myanmar (formerly
Burma), Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon) and Tanzania. The best known and most
valuable colour of Spinel is an intense, deep red though it is available
in pink, blue, lilac, purple and many other colours.
